Last night, Bob Weir & Wolf Bros closed out their four-night run at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. to a close. The final two performances took place on Saturday, Oct. 8 and Sunday, Oct. 9, respectively, and both saw the Grateful Dead guitarist-led ensemble, along with the National Symphony Orchestra, play euphonious renditions from the band’s catalog.

Like Weir and the Wolf Bros’ residency opening shows on Wednesday and Thursday, the gatherings over the weekend began with an Overture by the orchestra before Weir would come onstage accompanied by Jay Lane (drums), Don Was (bass), and Jeff Chimenti (piano) along with The Wolfpack string and brass quartet.

Following the Overture on Saturday, Weir & Wolf Bros moved from “China Cat Sunflower” into “I Know You Rider.” They rounded the frame with renditions of “Row Jimmy,” “The Other One” and “Morning Dew.”

Weir & Wolf Bros and the 96-member orchestra kicked things off their second set with “Playing in the Band.” They then played a pairing of “Lost Sailor” with “Saint of Circumstance.” They continued with some of their most beloved additions to the American songbook, “Wharf Rat” and the ever-funky “Shakedown Street.” They closed the set “Sugar Magnolia” > “Sunshine Daydream.”

For their encore, Bob Weir & Wolf Bros returned sans orchestra for “Ripple” and a fitting “One More Saturday Night.”

After the National Symphony Orchestra’s Overture on Sunday, Bob Weir & Wolf Bros returned to once again nod to their huge ensemble with “Playing in the Band.” The 1970 staple flowed into “Uncle John’s Band” and then into the first verse of “Dark Star.” They closed the first set with “Jack Straw” and “Morning Dew.”

The ensemble’s second set began with “The Other One” and then “Shakedown Street.” The Wolfpack and Wolf Bros took pause as Weir, and the orchestra handled a stilling “Days Between” before they rejoined for a reprise that contained “Dark Star,” “Uncle John’s Band,” and “Playing in the Band.” They closed the set with a beautiful interpretation of “Brokedown Palace.”

For the final encore, Weir, Wolf Bros, and Wolfpack returned for a run of five songs. They began with “Lady with a Fan,” which flowed into “Terrapin Station” and then “Terrapin Transit” before closing with “At a Siding” > “Terrapin Flyer.”

Bob Weir & Wolf Bros will perform next during a 75th birthday celebration for Weir at The Warfield in San Francisco from Oct. 14-16.
