People in six Washington counties should begin wearing masks indoors in public and on public transportation again, according to recommendations from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.   The latest information from the CDC shows that Lewis County, Pacific County, Thurston County, Grays Harbor County, Garfield County and Spokane County have COVID-19 community levels rated “high.” That means they have 200 or more new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people in the last seven days, or more than 20 new COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 people within a seven-day period.  KOIN-TV reported the counties range from Pacific County’s 418 cases per 100,000 people to Spokane County’s 207 cases per 100,000 people. The levels were calculated on June 23.

Cavaliers All-Star guard Darius Garland has agreed to a five-year, $193 million contract extension. His agent Rich Paul confirmed the move. Garland’s deal is the largest in franchise history. The fifth overall pick in 2019, Garland has quickly developed into one of the NBA’s top point guards. Last season, he averaged 21.7 points and 8.6 assists in 68 games while helping the Cavs win 22 more games than the previous season. Garland agreed to the same deal that another elite young guard, Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies, struck earlier in the week as the majority of the league’s offseason business began getting underway.

The Fourth of July holiday weekend is providing further evidence that the travel bug is at its most infectious levels since the pandemic began in 2020. Newly released numbers show 2.49 million passengers went through security checkpoints at U.S. airports Friday, surpassing the previous pandemic-era record of 2.46 million reached earlier in the week. The increase is the latest sign that leisure travelers aren’t being deterred from flying by rising fares, the ongoing spread of COVID-19 or worries about recurring flight delays and cancellations. In an even more telling indication, the average passenger volume at U.S. airports for the past week is near 2019 levels.

Authorities say two teenagers were killed and one man was injured in a shooting at Houston-area apartment complex. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said on Twitter early Saturday that deputies responded to reports of a shooting in the complex parking lot in north Harris County, about 15 miles north of downtown Houston, at 10:40 p.m. Friday. Gonzalez says two teenagers were pronounced dead at a hospital and a 20-year-old man who was shot twice is expected to survive. Multiple people have been detained. Sgt. Dennis Wolfford with Houston County Sheriff’s Office Homicide says the confrontation may have started at a pool party.

It was a first Tour stage win for Jakobsen and a second in two days for the Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team after Yves Lampaert’s win in Friday’s time trial. But Van Aert took yellow with a six-second bonus from finishing second. He leads Lampaert by one second overall. Two-time defending champion Tadej Pogačar stayed in third overall and nine seconds ahead of main rival Primož Roglič in eighth. They both finished tucked in the main pack.

U.S. officials are testing a new wildfire retardant after two decades of buying millions of gallons annually from one supplier, but watchdogs say the expensive strategy is overly fixated on aerial attacks at the expense of hiring more fire-line digging ground crews. The Forest Service says tests started last summer are continuing this summer with a magnesium-chloride-based retardant from Fortress. Fortress contends its retardants are effective and better for the environment than products offered by Perimeter Solutions. That company says its ammonium-phosphate-based retardants are superior. The Forest Service used more than 50 million gallons of retardant for the first time in 2020 as increasingly destructive wildfires plague the West.

The moves in the NBA right now are big and bold. That's what it takes now to win championships. It took Golden State about $340 million to win this past season's championship between payroll and luxury tax. And other teams now are getting in on the spending. Rudy Gobert getting traded to Minnesota is the latest example. The Timberwolves have nearly a half-billion dollars now committed to just Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns. But if such moves lead to a championship, they'll all obviously have been a bargain.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has used Twitter to announce he had met with Pope Francis. Musk used the @Pontifex handle in tweeting that he was “honored” to meet with Francis on Friday. He tweeted a photo showing Musk, Francis and four of Musk’s teenage children. The Vatican didn’t announce the audience or provide any information about what was discussed. Musk’s tweet followed one of a street scene in Venice. It suggested he might have had other stops on his tour. Francis frequently meets with high-profile figures in strictly private audiences that are held in a reception room of the Vatican hotel where he lives. A common talking point he uses when meeting with corporate CEOs is to appeal for them to use wealth and technology to help the poorest while caring for God’s creation.

Meanwhile, the father of the children died at a different location hours earlier, and their mother is missing. Names have not been released. Authorities believe all three children were under the age of 5.

Laber is charged with two counts of first-degree criminal mischief and two counts of livestock neglect. It isn't clear if she has an attorney.

A three-day assembly of Islamic clerics and tribal elders in Kabul has concluded with pledges of support for the Taliban and calls on the international community to recognize Afghanistan's Taliban-led government. The meeting — similar to Afghanistan's traditional Loya Jirgas — was called by the Taliban. A statement released Saturday at the end of the gathering called on countries in the region and the world, the United Nations, Islamic organizations and others to remove all sanctions imposed on Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover last August and unfreeze Afghan assets abroad. A cleric who attended the gathering says more than 4,500 Islamic clerics and elders who attended renewed their allegiance and loyalty to the Taliban’s supreme leader, Haibatullah Akhundzada.

The deadliest smuggling attempt in U.S. history underscores the limitations of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s massive border security operation. Texas is spending $3 billion on a mission that includes National Guard members, jail for suspects arrested on trespassing charges and buses to shuttle migrants to Washington, D.C. But the number of people found illegally crossing the nation’s entire southern border is around its highest in two decades. Abbott has pointed the finger at the Biden administration. This week, Abbott said Texas state troopers would begin additional inspections of tractor-trailers. State authorities haven't said how many trucks are being stopped.

Life expectancy dropped in Colorado for the second straight year in 2021, driven by the pandemic and drug overdose deaths. Colorado Public Radio reports the average life expectancy for Colorado residents fell to 78 years last year. That’s slightly lower than 2020, the first year of the pandemic when it was 78.4 years. The slide represents a persistent and significant drop of nearly three years compared to 2019. Dr. Eric France, the state’s chief medical officer, says the last time life expectancy dropped like this was in 1943. That was the nation's most fatal year of World War II.

The streets of London have been filled with color as the U.K. capital marked 50 years of Pride. A vibrant crowd of hundreds of thousands turned out to either take part in or watch the festivities. They formed a spectacle of rainbow flags, glitter and sequins. The parade came after two years of cancellations because of the coronavirus pandemic and a half-century after London’s first march to celebrate Pride in 1972. Saturday’s procession took on a similar route to the original. It started outside Hyde Park and touring the streets towards Westminster.

Airlines worked Saturday to deliver luggage to passengers around the world after a technical breakdown left at least 1,500 bags stuck at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport. It was the latest of several tangles hitting travelers this summer. The airport operator said the baggage sorting system had a technical malfunction Friday morning that caused 15 flights to leave without luggage. The airport handled about 1,300 flights overall Friday, the airport operator said. It came as airport workers are on strike at French airports to demand more hiring and higher pay to keep up with inflation.

The 12 jurors chosen this past week to decide whether Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz is executed will be exposed to horrific images and emotional testimony, but must deal with any mental anguish alone. The jurors and their alternates will tour the bloodstained building at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland where Cruz murdered 17 in 2018. They will see graphic security videos of teens being shot point-blank. They will hear tearful testimony from survivors and parents. And they will be told not to talk about any of it with anyone. If jurors need help, they are on their own. Florida and most states do not provide post-trial mental health counseling.

A Pulitzer Prize-winning Kashmir photojournalist says she has been stopped by Indian immigration authorities from flying to Paris without giving any reason. In a tweet, Sanna Irshad Mattoo says she was scheduled to travel from New Delhi to Paris for a book launch and photography exhibition as one of 10 winners of the Serendipity Arles Grant 2020. She says she was stopped at New Delhi airport on Saturday despite procuring a French visa. She says she was told by immigration officials that she would not be able to travel internationally. There was no immediate comment by Indian authorities. She has been working as a freelance photojournalist since 2018 depicting life in Indian-controlled Kashmir, where insurgents have been active for decades.

The first of the more than 200 firefighters from six European countries that will help their Greek colleagues in fighting wildfires arrived in Athens. The 28 Romanian firefighters were welcomed Saturday by Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Christos Stylianides and the leadership of Greece’s Fire Service. A Bulgarian contingent has arrived in central Greece, while teams from France, Finland, Germany and Norway are expected later in July and in August. They are part of a pilot European Union “prepositioning” program to make Europe-wide assistance in firefighting efforts permanent. Firefighting teams from other countries had also helped Greece deal with devastating wildfires in August 2021.

China’s top diplomat has arrived on his first visit to Myanmar since the military seized power last year to attend a regional meeting. The government says it's a recognition of its legitimacy while opponents protested it as a violation of peace efforts. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will join counterparts from Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam in a meeting of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation group in the central city of Bagan. The grouping is a Chinese-led initiative that includes the countries of the Mekong Delta, a potential source of regional tensions due to an increasing number of hydroelectric projects that are altering the flow and raising concerns of ecological damage. China has built 10 dams along the upper stretch of the Mekong.
